About Daniel Reeves — ExecTech Brief

“`html

I spent 16 years in management consulting advising mid-market CEOs on technology investments, and I left to build the briefing I kept giving them.

Background

My consulting career started at a Big Four firm, where I learned how technology decisions actually get made inside organizations — which is to say, under time pressure, with incomplete information, and by people whose job is running a business, not evaluating software. I eventually left to start my own boutique practice focused on mid-market companies in the $10M–$1B range. Same clients, more concentrated work: CEOs and VPs with real budget authority and real technology decisions on the table.

For 16 years, the briefing format was always the same. Bottom line first. Business implications, not technical architecture. What this means for headcount, for competitive position, for the next budget cycle. I gave versions of that briefing hundreds of times across dozens of clients. At some point it became obvious the format worked better as a publication than as a consulting deliverable.

I left consulting in 2024 and launched ExecTech Brief. Not because the consulting work stopped being interesting — because this reaches more of the right people faster.

What I Cover on ExecTech Brief

Every piece delivers one executive-grade insight that changes how a senior leader thinks about a technology decision. I’m not trying to be comprehensive — I’m trying to be useful to someone with 12 minutes before their next call. That means leading with the bottom line, being specific about dollar amounts and timeframes, naming vendors and comparing them directly when it matters, and distinguishing clearly between what’s proven at enterprise scale and what’s still early-stage. I reference Gartner, Forrester, and McKinsey research when it’s relevant. I pull from earnings calls and investor presentations as primary sources. I cite real contract structures and enterprise pricing where I can get to them.

What I don’t cover: technical explainers written for engineers, consumer-grade AI trends with no enterprise applicability, and anything that requires three paragraphs of background before the business implication shows up. My readers know what ROI, TCO, and build-vs-buy mean. I write accordingly.
